Review of The Guns of Navarone (1961) by John E — 29 Sep 2010
Solid (anti)war film well directed and filmed. It's got all the requisite action in a war film, but it also takes some brief asides into suspense and espionage. Gregory Peck may as well have been called Gregory Dick for this movie; his portrayal nicely shows us a man who is used to being taken seriously and seeing missions through no matter what the cost.
Most fascinating was David Niven's serious performance as opposed to the unflappably charming Briton that we are used to seeing from him. It's too bad so many did not notice the movie's anti-violence stance and took it to simply be an entertaining star-studded picture.
Yes, some of the effects are dated and the leads are obviously too old for a mission of this type, but it remains quite entertaining.
