Review of The Guest (2014) by Cameron J — 22 Jan 2015
When it all comes together there are a lot of loose ends and it all makes little sense, but that almost doesn't matter at all given the overall wtf-factor of the movie. Dan Stevens provides 2014's second creepiest performance after Jake Gyllenhaal, and best of all the cinematography and production design are stellar despite a budget of $2 million.
Just when things are becoming "really? Is that the twist ending?", the film throws at us one of the best-designed action sequences since "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol"'s tower scene, bringing the major characters to a low-budget haunted house for a thrilling final shoot-out set to a mixtape made by one of the film's characters.
The action is also hilariously impatient and efficient, edited for the perfect mix of horror and comedy. A genre film that defies its limitations to become great entertainment.
