Review of The Guest (2014) by Ian B — 12 Feb 2015
The Guest was one of my favourite films of 2014, but unfortunately it's not a movie everyone will "get". What we have here is a slasher film masquerading as an action/thriller that also happens to be a satire.
Think Halloween meets The Terminator. If you understand all the references and what the filmmakers are going for this will quickly become one of your favourites. If you don't, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.
The story is a simple one, but this movie is far more concerned with taking its intended audience on an extremely fun thrill ride. The Guest has some beautiful cinematography, a great 80's synth score and plenty of suspense, gore and action.
..but none of it would really work without Dan Stevens. He gives a terrific performance that holds the entire thing together. Like I said, not everyone will get the references and the tone this movie is going for, but if you do, I know you'll love it as much as I did.
