Review of The Guardsman (1931) by Jeff B — 01 Feb 2010
Hilarious movie starring husband and wife actors Alfrend Lunt and Lynn Fontanne as bickering husband and wife theatre actors. Lunt thinks his wife doesn't love him anymore and will leave him soon, so he disguises himself as a Russian Prince to make her fall in love with him.
Lunt and Fontanne are wonderful together, I particularly loved the final scene. Even though this was one of their first talking films, they still managed to fit in their great facial expressions. Roland Young is also a ton of fun as their critic friend.
I wanted to see this for a while because Lunt was the loser of the Best Actor Oscar when Wallace Beer and Fredric March tied for the win. A real treat from beginning to end.
