Review of The Guard (2011) by Brent W — 08 Mar 2012
A US version of this "mismatched cops forced to work together on major drugs bust" comedy would possibly feature Eddy Murphy and John Goodman, and would probably be dreadful, but although the plot is somewhat familiar an excellent script, great performances from all the cast, (but in particular from Brendan Gleeson as the maverick rural cop), and fine camera work, together with a generous dollop of Irish whimsy raise this film onto another level altogether - certainly one of the funniest comedies I've seen for a long while.
This is probably a film that will appeal to men more than women, and some people may find some of the humour too politically incorrect for comfort, but I'll probably want to get the DVD and watch this several more times to pick up all the jokes I missed first time around.
