Review of The Grudge (2004) by Davey M — 24 Oct 2010
Disappointing to see the Americanization suck the blood of Shimizu's extraordinary original film--by trying to explain more, give something of a more linear story, and create some sympathetic characters, it really just makes the whole thing a lot more dull and less emotionally engaging.
By upping the production values and adding a horrible Christopher Young score that keeps telling us when it's going to scare us, it strips away the surreal, terrifying horror. There are a couple good scenes, and it's interesting to see the "Ju-On" universe expanded in some ways, but Shimizu fared much, much better in his homeland.
