Review of The Grudge (2004) by Jarrett M — 10 Nov 2011
I have some mixed feelings about this film. It is not a good movie, but it isn't a complete and total failure either. However, if it wasn't for this film, I wouldn't have looked into the original, and far superior film and consequently won't have kick-started my love of Asian horror films.
I'm sure this movie will work for certain people and scare the crap out of them, but it really didn't work for me. Of course, I did jump several times throughout the film, but more as a result of pounding musical cues accompanied by a cheap jump scare than as a result of fear and built-up tension.
Considering that this film is directed by the same man that brought us the far better original film, I tend to place the blame more on the 'Americanized' script, and less than enthusiastic performances from the American cast.
If you really, really want to see the story and are deathly allergic to subtitles, than check this out. Otherwise, save yourself the trouble and go watch the original, Ju-On, and prepare to experience the same story, only actually scary.
