Review of The Grudge (2004) by Darius G — 08 Nov 2012
A very good scary movie and definitely an improvement from the Japanese original, "Ju-on: The Grudge". Both films were directed by Takashi Shimizu but the Hollywood version makes more sense and is more logical--thanks to screenwriter Stephen Susco and, perhaps to some extent, producer Sam Raimi.
The story has been simplified and the characters lessened, and what you get is a more robust and more coherent movie. It's managed to keep me wondering what would happen next and why the 'curse' existed in the first place, even though I've already seen the original.
Of course, this review assumes that you have already seen the Japanese version. If you haven't, then I'd say "The Grudge" is a really well-made suspense film with all the essential elements of the genre in its proper place. And still handled well by director Shimizu.
