Review of The Groomsmen (2006) by Cassandra M — 28 Nov 2009
Paulie (Edward Burns) is two weeks ahead of his marriage and his soon to be wife Sue (Brittany Murphy) is pregnant with their unplanned child, but yet expected child. He is struggling with the thoughts of getting married and becoming a father at the same time. His groomsmen containing of Paulies brother, cousin and childhood friends have other struggles. TC (John Leguizamo) left Staten Island 8 years ago without saying anything, due to the fact that he finally accepted that he was gay. Dez (Matthew Lillard) owns a bar, has a solid marriage and two kids, but still dreams of rockstardom. Jimbo (Donal Logue) is having a hard time to accept that he can not bear children and he is ruining his life due to these thoughts. Mike (Jay Mohr) is living with his dad, has the same job since high school and has problems of letting go of his ex. They all wrestle with issues of fatherhood, honesty and growing up, and the five thirty-somethings discover their extended adolescence might be finally coming to an end.
"The Groomsmen" is not a bad flick, but it does not either put itself on the map so to speak. I like Edward Burns and his Director/Writer outings. I think this is pretty ok in most areas, and I can recognize myself in some of their struggles. Specifically in sibling problems and indifferences. Thus, this is oki doki in my book.
