Review of The Grifters (1990) by Aleksandar B — 05 Jan 2009
Definitely not a caper movie and about a million miles away from The Sting as a truckload of unsympathetic characters (all excellently acted by the wonderful cast) double cross each other in a desperate attempt to emerge intact from the con artist game.
The three leads - all playing essentially different facets of the standard con artist character - are impressive, and there are some wonderful supporting turns, with special mention going to Pat Hingle as one of the vilest mobsters you are likely to see.
Frears direction is pin sharp and the picture apes the look and feel of classic noir with an impressive conviction. But this is a film that is hard to enjoy, difficult to get involved with and, at many points, hard to follow.
It will be admired - but never loved.
