I think The Green Mile has me very torn and I am having a hard time deciding where it ranks on my internal film list. I liked the film and it is good but I am not sure if it is up with the ranks of Shawshank Redemption and some of the best films of all time.

I guess I'll start by saying everything that is right with this film. The acting is great and the storyline is entertaining. It is easy to follow and straight forward. The symbolism is also outstanding.

It is clear that John Coffey represents Jesus Christ with his healing abilities and his kind heart. He is sitting on death row for a crime that he did not commit. He is okay with it and ready to die just like Jesus Christ.

All this seems like a perfect film but all this symbolism and plot development takes place in the second half of the film. The first half is good don't get me wrong but it doesn't mean anything.

The second half makes it seem like the film is about John Coffey and everything he does and is sacrificing. The first half on the other hand focuses more on Tom Hanks and other things that are going on around the prison.

The film just seems like it doesn't have a clear goal or any progression in the first half. Nonetheless this movie is good and definitely worth seeing.
