Review of The Green Knight (2021) by Tvjerry — 03 Aug 2021
Dev Patel stars as Sir Gawain, who’s sent on a quest by his uncle King Arthur to confront the ominous titular character. His mystical journey includes encounters with creatures, otherworldly and otherwise.
While the film is full of luscious visual beauty, the pacing is painfully slow. It could have easily lost 30 minutes and been more effective. On top of the disastrous tempo (or lack thereof) the story is cluttered by ominious statements that make no sense.
If I’d studied the 14th century poem on which it’s based, I might understand it better, but that’s not excuse for obtuse storytelling. Writer/director David Lowery must get all the blame for this tedious, pretentious slog.
