Review of The Green Inferno (2013) by Hugo G — 23 Sep 2015
7.6/10.
Eli Roth is back directing and doing what he does best. This movie had me very excited since it was first announced a couple of years back, and finally after being delayed its being released in theaters. Led by Lorenza Izzo, the movie features mostly foreign unknown faces, that although acting-wise were good, some of them weren't that great, like Ariel Levy who for some reason never seemed credible or like making any effort, and although his accent played a part, it was mostly his lack of performance. But aside from him, the majority was decent. Also, special mention to Daryl Sabara who was actually pretty good too. Moreover, the movie was very gruesome and gory, there were some intense scenes that were hard to watch and although I don't think it's the most terrifying movie I've seen, it was tough to watch at times. That being said, I was expecting it to be a little more over the top for some reason, but that was probably because of all the build up and excitement. Roth is essentially back in its comfort zone and although it probably isn't his best movie, it's what you would expect in terms of goriness and dark humor. However, on the negative side, some of the visual effects were weird looking and clearly not on par to some of his previous work, which really made me worry that he isn't paying much attention to that, because it really cheapens the movie by looking fake. Overall, I'm not quite sure if it was what I was expecting, but it was surely intense, gory and you spend a fairly entertaining time at the movies, however it's performances weren't the best and you get the feeling that it was done on a low budget just by looking at most of its shady effects, aside from that it is a good start for the upcoming horror movies season.
