Review of The Green Inferno (2013) by Spookie M — 25 Sep 2015
Eli Roth is a master at always creating cringing gory films and trying to recreate a 1980s horror movie with his style. The Green Inferno, I have to say is one of his better films, as he creates some tough gory torture scenes that makes it hard to sit through without flinching. Eli Roth does the job well with his direction, and making the film intense. Eli Roth is responsible for films like Cabin Fever, which was okay but cheesy, and Hostel Part 1 and 2 that were basically torture porn but boring. The Green Inferno is a fair horror film, it does have some cringe worthy intense scenes.
Justine (Lorenza Izzo) is a college student that joins an activist group that wants to stop a corporation from obliterating the amazon forest and the native tribes. Justine and group leader Alejandro (Ariel Levy) and his group travel to the amazon rainforest to put a stop to the corporation. Only until, there plane crashes in the forest and the native tribe they encounter is by far friendly. Justine and her friends are tortured and held captive, as the tribe taunts and prepares to feast on them.
The Green Inferno does take a while for the movie to set up, the first act is a set up to story about a young girl, not sure where she fits in to the social activism, until she joins one and travels to Peru. Eli Roth tries to capture as much scenery of the country as he can. The second act does kick in around half an hour into movie is when group is being attacked by the tribe. The build up suspense works well and the first characters death was disturbing and leaves you in a disturbed feel throughout. There are a couple of awkward scenes, not sure if Eli Roth has some weird sense of humor from a character having digestive problems or a characterâ(TM)s sexual act in the movie which felt like it tried to have some comic relief but failed.
Eli Roth must have enjoyed trying to have Lorenza Izzo taking the spot light and her characterâ(TM)s attempt of escaping and running around with nothing but a small cloth on during the climax of the film. Lorenza Izzo is a stunning actress, she did well with her character. I would say The Green Inferno is an intense horror film and I would recommend it. But there is one thing that ruined it from being something good was the final five minutes. Like some horror films, they have a good premise until the ending comes around the corner and there is like a 50/50 chance of a gripping ending or a terrible ending based on characters actions. The Green Inferno falls in that dull ending with a political activist tone. Otherwise, it was better than expected for an Eli Roth film and does have a few thrills that will keep you on a tight grip with the bloody gore.
