Review of The Greatest Showman (2017) by Richard S — 28 Dec 2018
I don't seek out musicals but when I am "forced" to watch them I find that I usually enjoy them. So there you have it, my dark secret is out. Actually, a lot of musicals are very very naff but there was something about this one I enjoyed. I think it all has to do with style and perhaps if they have something unusual about them which is why I also enjoyed Moulin Rouge many years ago. This one follows the story of P.T Barnam who spent most of his life dreaming of something bigger and so creates the modern circus but then loses it all as he forgets about his new found family to chase a new dream in the form of a classical singer who brings in the crowds wherever she goes.
The film looked great, the set pieces were great and there are a number of songs that will get stuck in your head for days to come. I'm not going to start watching The King and I on repeat, but this kind of musical is something I can follow.
