Review of The Greatest Showman (2017) by Adam M — 06 Sep 2018
Music and choreography were great. Hugh Jackman is super charming. Costumes were gorgeous. That script is very bad though. The main problem is that the main plot resolves after about half and hour and the rest of the movie is just a bunch of meandering sub-plots.
A lot of the dialogue is pretty stilted. Especially the kids at the beginning. ("I don't know what my future will hold," said no real child ever.) Little things bug me about how the script approaches it's subject matter.
Like oh jeez, it sure is hard to be a successful white man huh? And I'm pretty sure the moral of the story at the end of The Greatest Showman is that you can't be a good father unless you're unemployed.
The effects budget was also very poor. So much weird CGI that just looks awful. Could a movie about the circus really not afford to hire a lion tamer for a couple of days? Jeez. It's worth a watch if you want some good music and fun dancing, that's what it sets out to do and it accomplishes it's goal.
