Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Rosie L — 03 Mar 2017
A refreshingly simple, yet enthralling plot, without all the over-embellished and indulgent tendencies we have come to expect from current action movies. If attending this film expecting to see at least one hour of hand-to-hand pointless combat then expect to be disappointed, for this is not just about fighting a villain, but fighting the manifestation of the evil of man.
It is the story of a Western man becoming humbled by the harmony of a different culture, something utterly refreshing given the times we face. It is an honest tale, with at times witty and comedic dialogue.
If one is critiquing this film for its lack of excitement and adventure, then one is ignoring the beauty that comes from the mixture of culture, legend and humanity. What is disappointing is the audience seems to seek none of this but the usual superficial warfare and absence of morality many action movies contain.
