Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Pam W — 19 Feb 2017
I'm giving this movie three stars for the movie and an extra star for the cinematography. As far as plots go, it's average. It's a monster movie. Can brave defenders save China? Along the way, subplots focus on themes of greed, friendship, trust, redemption, and courage, It's not a deep movie, but it's not without its own message. Basically, the movie is a romp: fun, fast, with enough good acting and story to keep it going from beginning to end. It is also beautifully filmed, with good special effects and amazing scenery. I do not usually focus on use of color, but wow, in this movie color was used to great effect.
Don't go into this expecting nuance. Don't go into this expecting high drama. Go into this expecting a fun, reasonably fast-paced, visually dazzling monster movie, and you are more likely than not to enjoy the movie.
More visual monsters than 2014's "Godzilla", scarier creatures than "Night of the Lepus", a monster legend that actually makes sense, and 100% killer-tomato-free.
