Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Ty A — 24 Feb 2017
This movie had so much potential but fell a little flat. Had it not been for Matt Damon, which I know was met with resistance in Asia, this movie would almost not be worth watching. The story itself is famous and it's refreshing to infuse western culture with stories such as this not otherwise known to those outside of China.
However the costumes were garish. The Chinese actors were more or less fairly poor actors which combined with the costumes almost sank this film. Had this entire story been done in a more Hollywood, big movie style, adhering to typical blockbuster rules this movie probably would have been fairly epic globally.
Overall with seeing but keep perspective and context. This is a Chinese movie made for Chinese telling a Chinese story that just happens to be in English.
