Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Jimmy K — 24 Feb 2017
While The Great Wall is nothing particularly new, it's bright palette and interesting creature design manage to keep the film from getting stale throughout its relatively short runtime. One can't help but notice the surprising amount of practical sets, though the creatures themselves are never more than CG. Despite this, however, they manage to feel heavy and (nearly always) quite real.
The diverse array of characters and the general casting off of the typical "white savior" storyline make the film feel surprisingly progressive, though Matt Damon's Irish accent slips seemingly at random.
All in all, The Great Wall is not a movie to be re-watched, but is still a fun spectacle.
