Review of The Great Muppet Caper (1981) by Dominic C — 21 Feb 2014
I love the Muppets, and this second Muppet movie is almost as good as The Muppet Movie. I don't think I enjoy quite so much, but still have very very little to complain about if anything. The story here is very nice, and even though you know who the villain is, the plot is still very fun.
The villain here Nicky Holiday is probably the most interesting Muppet villain. Nicky doesn't reform in the end like Tex Richman, but that's not to say he's a true monster like Doc Hopper from The Muppet Movie.
He does have fascinating feelings for Miss Piggy, and that makes him much more interesting and sympathetic. The Muppets themselves are good as ever, and this movie gets points for bringing possibly even more Muppets than in the first movie.
The songs aren't quite as catchy as they were in the Muppet Movie, but they're still great fun to sing along with particuarly Hey A Movie. Perhaps out of all the movies with the exception of only The Muppets, this movie goes best into Kermit and Piggy's relationship.
He isn't instantly stricken with her like she is with him, but he still cares. He does kiss her in this movie with a sweet and ultimately silly moment. Piggy here is represented better than in any other movie.
She is a diva, and first thinks of her dream status, but slowly starts to care more for Kermit, and realize as she says to Nicky that he's wrong, and Kermit's right. Again this movie is a fun, sweet, and hillarious movie.
No Muppet fan could possibly be disappointed.
