Review of The Great Mouse Detective (1986) by Genevieve R — 06 Jul 2012
Not as highly regarded as many of the Disney 'classics' but this has so much going for it. Not only does it feature the creative duo of Clements and Musker who would go on to give Disney 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Beauty And The Beast' but it also features some beautiful animation, a fantastic scene stealing piece of vocal work from the great Vincent Price but a solid plot to boot.
Unlike later Disney films that would rely upon songs to either pad out the running time or move the plot along the few songs featured here are of a secondary concern and are used minimally to allow the story room to breath.
And what a story, a great tribute to the Holmes stories and one that wouldn't be out of place within the Holmesian canon. It may not have the cutesy characters that Disney 'classics' are renowned for but don't let that stop you from introducing your children to it.
