Review of The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief (2006) by Casey B — 17 Aug 2007
At its most basic level this is just a film about male geishas in Japan, and it is understandably entertaining. But at its heart it is a commentary on modern day romance where love is whittled down to a temporary escape from loneliness achievable through alcohol and money, hypocrisy and self-deception.
In the end, while you want the real thing for the hosts and their clients and especially yourself, you cannot help wondering if even momentary companionship still seems worth every penny.
