Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Kim S — 12 Mar 2014
Not only visually masterful, but with direction and acting that is poignant, evocative, and breathes the spirit of Fitzgerald. I had been skeptical before seeing it because of the hip/hop anachronisms but the film blended this in perfectly as the most parallel form of music today could be to Jazz then.
The critics put Fitzgerald in an ivory tower, but I think he would have been very pleased to see the way this film captures his ideas of luxury, corruption, reminiscence, idealism, and beauty.
