Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Raji K — 24 Apr 2014
Tobey Maguire and Leonardo Dicaprio star as Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby respectively in the Great Gatsby. The film's director previously most known for Moulin Rouge applies his glittery and lavish style to this film as well.
The direction style works perfectly since the concept of the Great Gatsby is all about being excessive. Dicaprio does a great job as Gatsby and his portrayal of a man who has lost his past and believes he can fit it all with wealth is well done.
Carey Mulligan is the weakest element as Daisy in the film but this was mostly expected. The soundtrack is the most controversial part varying from Gershwin to Jay Z, and it fits at better moments than others, but clearly was an attempt to modernize the film and broaden the audience.
Overall the Gatsby remake is a solid film and does a good job for the most part staying honest with the book.
