Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Anderson E — 24 Apr 2016

The characterization in the movie The Great Gatsby was decent. For characters like Tom, for instance, all they had to do was have someone act really angry all the time. The same goes for Jordan; there wasn't anything too particular about her. However, I don't think it's that simple with characters like Daisy, Nick, and especially Gatsby. It's hard to show the way in which those people express their thoughts. I think Nick should have used less facial expressions in the book, and also seemed pretty opinionated in the way he said things. I just think he should have less expressive in the movie. In addition, I think Gatsby was a little too smooth. I think some creepiness could have been added to his swagger. However, I think they nailed it with Daisy. Her expressiveness fit just right with the type of character she was; carless and confused.

The mood seemed to be one of excitement and anticipation. I say this because something intense was always going on. (Whether that is at lunch, or Gatsby's party, or on the a summer day, everything is intense.) However, I think everything was a little rushed. That may just be because it's a movie and everything has to be crunched down, but I think the right length is key to get full taste of the general mood of awkwardness and curiousness as well as excitement and anticipation.

I think the scene with everyone in the ice room on the hot summer day. It got me in my feels. Tom was furious, Gatsby was nervous and just flat out creepy, Daisy was torn between two sides, Jordan was shocked, and Nick was simply being observant like usual. I don't think the rest of the movie matched the book as well as this one. This one really spoke to my heart and forced me to become emotionally turbulated.
