Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Varun C — 07 Apr 2014
I'm new to the Romantic Drama genre, and I have not touched upon the source materials of the plot, so this movie had quite an impression on me.
Thanks to some superb directing, the plot was carried out with style, and it kept me engaged in the story throughout. The first half was mainly glamour and party (a showcase for 3D), but it set the scene up perfectly, from Wall Street to Gatsby's Mansion to the curious Green light across the river. It missed Leo's presence slightly, but we could still feel his character and his ideas through the others, especially from Toby's (former Spider-Man) colourful narrative.
In the scenes he did act in, Dicaprio was typically powerful in portraying a difficult role. This time, he was a suave millionaire that had layers of secrets underneath, waiting to be peeled as the story grows from parties, booze, and dancing girls, to intense drama, romance, and tragedy.
