Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Joshua T — 23 Apr 2016
Modern, upbeat, heart throbbing love story are all ways to describe this exceptionally unique movie. Other words may be grim, corny, and unrealistic. This just shows that The Great Gatsby covers both sides of the spectrum and is an unlike many other movies in its genre.
Leonardo and Toby combine to make a dynamic duo complimenting each other in both the way they speak and the way they communicate with each other. Carey and Elizabeth go together as perfectly as they could as the two main women of the movie. Their chemistry is perfect for the setting and just kind of completes the whole vibe the film is trying to give off.
From start to finish, this modernistic movie has musical theme that is inaccurate towards it's time period having Jay-Z, Lana Del Ray, and many others playing at parties and different situations throughout the movie. This aspect of the movie, while different and slightly inaccurate, simply sets the tone for the rest of the movie and plot line while also adding an extra twist and surprise to the overall. The modernistic setting inside of the old 1930s world gives the viewers a reminder that it is set in the same area that we live in today and that the New York area has really just changed a lot.
The Great Gatsby is a heartbreaking, mushy, and sweet love story. With characters on every end of the spectrum. From gangsters to congressman to prostitutes to mechanics, there is really a large array of characters in the story to compare and contrast to each other. This just adds a whole other level of imagination for the viewers to look at.
Beginning in one of the richest areas of Long island, the story lines takes the viewers all over the place. Magnificent mansions, hotel rooms, small cottages, and the slums and gas stations are all locations to which the characters travel and they all look slightly out of place at all of the above locations, just in different ways. While the main part of the story is set in the mansions and well groomed areas, most of the key occurrences take place in the run down gas stations and slums.
Throughout the whole film there are unseen twist and turns in the plot that just add the to suspense and uniqueness of the movie.
