Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by David B — 16 Mar 2009
Though this adaptation does not go deep into the souls of the charactors, it does tell Fitzgerald's story as good as the cinema medium can. Insted of focusing of Carraway's view point of the Daisy/Gatsby reunion, the movie insted makes gatsby the focal point, a ploy, I imagine, to give Redford more screen time.
this ends up as a good move for Redford perfectly embodies Gatsby. Great performances abound from everyone, even Mia Farrow's shallow rendering of Daisy is fitting for the tone of the film. So yes, it doesn't do the book total justice, but then again, which film adaptation can? Instead this is a great piece of cinema with wonderful sets, costumes, music, and Francis Ford Coppolla's fantastic screenplay.
If you are a fan of the novel, watch this film and then make a judgment for yourself.
