Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Justin V — 19 Nov 2010
A fail adaption of a great book. This film had terrible cinematography, horrible writing and very awkward or underdeveloped characters, all in the film, the book works on its own because the point of view from Nick works while it is unclear what the film is trying to express throughout it.
The issue is that the book provided enough information or showed us show much through hidden symbolism and amazing writing while the film abandons the point of view from ONE character or different characters throughout, I just watched rich people being rich people.
The writing and dialogue for the film would be word for word at times but then be delivered as out of place or lame. The cinematography was really bad having extreme close ups of characters faces and jerk the camera around to get a shot of another character and there is one particular shot of a party scene, it is a long dolly shot that lasts for a minute or two but it didn't show anything besides a bunch of people talking at a party, we've established that and it doesn't add anything new to the movie except showing more and more people talking for five minutes! Another issue is the awkward weird music that seems really out of place throughout the film, especially the ending credits.
Overall, this film is a mess, terrible acting to terrible cinematography. Its a really bad movie.
