Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Jeffrey A — 20 May 2013
Extremely faithful adaptation of the famed novel, the sets and costumes are lots of fun but the film doesn't really take off. Probably a victim of a too reverent attitude toward the source material, originating in a vastly different medium, and failing to translate effectively into cinema.
The Rhode Island mansions are the best actors in this one, while the actor actors are not as good, with Mia Farrow in particular failing to convey any appeal as Daisy Buchanan, which is kind of important since Gatsby's undying love for her is pretty much the main motivating force of the whole entire plot.
