Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Abel D — 31 May 2013
A lax and stuffy opening 30 minutes and overwritten narration that seems to be blatantly cut and pasting chunks of the novel (sometimes describing things we can actually see on the screen!) aside, this Clayton/Coppola version of the iconic American tale of 20s decadence still manages to entertain, with lavish & colourful production values, a lively and jazzy score that enhances the party sequences, and a game cast, the contrast of Redford's calm and reserved demeanor versus the bombast and ditz of Farrow surprisingly working well enough with their coupling.
