Review of The Great Escape (1963) by Drew T — 25 Jan 2009
Classic, big-budgeted blockbuster (based on fact) about a large group of Allied officers who create a daring, intricate plot to escape from a German prison camp in the midst of World War II. They run into not a few obstacles to reacquire their freedom.
Epic, grand entertainment still works today, both as a multi-faceted storyline with good characterizations and as a suspenseful action spectacle. This movie boosted--or helped make--several careers, including Charles Bronson, James Coburn, James Garner, and Donald Pleasance.
Steve McQueen has fun as the happy-go-lucky American who is always getting into trouble...for his and others' benefit. It is a bit dated, but the acting, suspense, editing and music (the latter also contributing to the dated-ness) make up for it in spades.
This movie is a lot of fun.
