Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Joel B — 02 Aug 2008
I don't normally like older films...Just thought I'd get that out of the way. So, if I were biased at all, I would probably be biased against this movie from the start.
This was my first Charlie Chaplin film. He is a genius. Watching this movie, I saw the inspiration for some of the funniest people in film, like Mel Brooks, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Eddy Murphy, etc. I bet a lot of their funniest moments were either inspired by, or already done by Charlie Chaplin.
It's just classic humor.
The movie is actually spoofing Hitler's rise to power. The movie was made in 1940! I can only imagine how controversial it was. Making fun of Adolf Hitler, while the man is still just getting started. Wow.
I'm getting lost in a bundle of words on how to truly describe this movie, honestly. One minute it has you laughing while Hinkle is ranting in German, then the next minute you're wanting to rip someone apart, as you watch a Jew getting killed trying to protect his business.
This movie is a must-see, plain and simple.
