Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Kyle T — 09 Apr 2012
One of the most important comedies in film history, in my opinion. It captures the vaudeville style perfectly, has plenty to say, and does so fantastically, and it is simply just really, REALLY funny. Charlie Chaplin plays two roles, and does both amazingly well, and it's a brilliant satire of Hitler's power (prior to the Holocaust).
The film does so much and stands the test of time, and lays in the best all-time, not just comedies, but films in general. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone and everyone, it just works on pretty much every level that it wants to, and sometimes even exceeds that.
You'll find yourself bursting out laughing very often, there is a reason why it is known to be Chaplin's (possibly) greatest film ever made.
