Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Harry W — 16 Aug 2015
A hilarious parody of Naziism when such a thing was still a serious concern. It's truly impressive how it manages to both make a serious point and be funny at the same time. Usually propaganda pieces only manage one or the other.
To pull that off in his first talkie too? Amazing! Of all the silent film stars out there how many are now best known for their first talkie? Chaplin's obviously a master of slapstick but he proves very capable of verbal humor too.
