Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by The Critic ( — 26 Oct 2013
King of Comedy Charles Chaplin takes an interesting step away from his iconic Tramp for his first sound picture. 'The Great Dictator' is the great filmmaker's depiction of his world, delivered with uncompromising passion and effort in a story that sways from laugh-out-loud satire to thought-provoking amusement.
Much has been said of Chaplin's final speech (most of it negative), but the filmmaker was always unrelenting in his depiction of the human condition and chose to give voice to many who did not have one. The result is a beautifully made, humane piece from one of the medium's greatest masters.
