Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Garrett R — 15 Sep 2009
THE GREAT DICTATOR is supreme comedic entertainment, in the forms of brilliant and brave political satire and fun physical comedy. Chaplin's comedic genius is at its brightest and best in this film.
Directed, produced, and written by Chaplin, he lampoons the ridiculous and self-centered personas of dicator's in the mid-twentieth century. No one in the history of film could have made a more timely and topical comedy during this period in time (1940, to be exact, one year after the invasion of Poland).
In addition, Paulette Goddard is a beautiful and dramatically endowed actress on screen. The film not only establishes a realtistic storyline that contemplates a dictator's takeover of the world, but also balances a finely dramatic side-story of romantic love and one family staying together (and away from the stormtroopers), with Charlie Chaplin playing the main character in each.
Essentially, the film is also a lead-up to the wonderful climax and conclusion. Moreover, just enjoy the film already! Be ready for more Critiques and Opinions on Every Movie I Can Get My Hands On!
