Review of The Great Debaters (2007) by Philip P — 30 Aug 2008
Even though we know, by the DVD cover, how The Great Debaters will end, it is still a movie very much worth watching. In his second directorial effort, Denzel makes a credible movie about racism that isnt over drama-tized, instead it is honest, straight-forward and gives a vast amount of insight into the complex world of what is right and wrong.
It is so difficult to see all sides of a story-although one clearly can see the wrong in racism- that sometimes we only take into account the side that comforts us the most, and in doing this we can be scared away from what is true justice.
The war of words the debate teams use to resolve these differences of opinion is magnificent to watch, and you really feel for them. This is a strong film that is beautiful to look at and powerful to experience.
