Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Cory W — 16 Apr 2009
This was a neat little quirky comedy. Collin Hanks stars as a college dropout who is hired to be the personal assistant to a washed up, jerkish magician (John Malkavitch). The film follows the two and their misadventures with his track to get back on the mainstream market.
Emily Blunt plays a PR rep who tries to help Buck Howard, and slowly blossoms a relationship with Hanks character. Tom Hanks also has a small role, ironicly as Collin's father. The film is not a laugh out comedy, but a smart story with laughs along the way.
The film was well written and well directed. It did leave some stuff left wide open in the end, and the film needed to elaborate on some things more, but this was a neat film. Overall, a good movie.
