Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Prasad P — 14 Jul 2009
It is for characters such as this that the great John Malkovich exists. Abrasive, eccentric, deluded, gifted, unflagging and entertaining, Buck Howard is a magician/mentalist well past his glory days who makes a living doing off-the-track venues across America.
Colin Hanks (son of Tom) is solid as as his road manager who learns a thing or two about life as he hangs out and experiences the ups and downs of roadie life with a past-his-prime mentalist. When a new shot at fame comes calling, Buck Howard is all too eager to snap at it, but is it what he really is all about? A wonderfully enticing character drama, in turns funny and wise.
It is not a great film, but a warm, entertaining one.
