Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Felis D — 10 Sep 2009
This was a surprisingly good movie. It starts in a quirky way using a check box conceit, which disappears after the first 10 minutes, and from there becomes a rather straight-forward, conventional exercise in story-telling.
What keeps the movie itself from being too run-of-the-mill is John Malkovich's performance as an over-the-top personality. His character is obnoxious, full of himself, and incredibly horrible to the people around him, yet Malkovich manages to make him a likable and sympathetic person.
Colin Hanks plays well as the everyman helper, giving a performance that every once in a while gives a glimpse of Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller. Over all, a good movie, and probably one of the better two hours (or so) that I have spent in a movie theatre.
