Review of The Great Beauty (2013) by Zacho D — 12 Jan 2014
"The Great Beauty" is just like the title in terms of it's beautiful cinematography and exploitation of Rome in a "La Dolce Vita" sorta fashion, but also original in it's own right.
Probably the best cinematography of 2013. The art direction is really good here too. I also loved the party sequences. Made the film really exciting at times. On top of all of this, here we also have one of the best soundtracks of the year! Outside of that, solid performances throughout, but none that will amaze you and a pretty good story about Jep, his life in Rome, the great beauty, and the question of why after decades did he never write a book after his last book achieved outstanding success? Overall, this is a gorgeous looking movie with an interesting, but not amazing movie unlike "The Hunt" or "Blue Is The Warmest Colour".
However, "The Great Beauty" is still worth a glance given that it is breathtakingly beautiful.
