Review of The Great Beauty (2013) by Margarita S — 02 Mar 2015
I liked the look and feel of this movie, and it certainly made me want to return back to Rome. If you enjoy Fellini, then you'll enjoy this one since it is constructed in the same vein with similar themes.
It lacks originality in that regard. Toni Servillo holds the movie together with his portrayal of the writer Jep who upon his 65th birthday begins to search for great beauty in life, something more substantial than the decadent lifestyle he's been living.
Jep is sad and resigned, insightful yet flawed. Servillo's ability to embody all of these characteristics is so natural. The film though stutters and starts throughout and ends rather anti-climatically.
