On his 65th birthday, a novelist (who only wrote one novel) turned socialite reflects on the emptiness of his life and his search for beauty. A little too self-consciously Fellini-esque and (separate issue) unfocused, but with breathtaking Roman camerawork and imaginative staging, there are many scenes that live up to the title.
