A faithful adaptation of one of my all-time favorite books, The Grapes of Wrath is the remarkable story of the Joad family, as they travel from their desolated farm in Oklahoma to California: the "Promised Land".

This is a very moving story about the 1930s Dust Bowl and also a hard look at the lives of lower class people during the Depression. It's not an easy film to watch. This is America at its worst: swarms of unemployed fighting over specks of bread and pay, locals denying "Oakies" an opportunity to work, police faking riots in order to arrest families.

In the end, this is a perfect film about the triumph of the human spirit, but it also reminds me that we can't ever let such an economic depression occur again. Should be required viewing for all Americans.
