Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Adrian B — 25 May 2010
An extremely strong film from 1940. There are number of cool things associated with it. First, the drive along the Route 66 to California was interesting, passing through several towns that are known for the railroad (ATSF now BNSF), particularly Needles and Barstow, both in California.
Two, the art direction is outstanding and the scenery is incredible. Finally, the journey for this Oklahoma family is quite interesting. When they reach California, the police are not fans of them and want to run them out of town because they think they are communists, in which they have no idea what "Reds" mean.
In addition, the kids did not no what a toilet or a shower was, so they knew nothing of modern inemities. Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell's acting was very good. Great film, even though it was extremely American and I am Canadian.
