Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Mario S — 24 Dec 2013
Every frame a painting, borrowing hugely from the palette used by Gordon Willis ("The Godfather") and the visual poetics of Terrence Malick; the story oddly reminiscent of "Kung Fu Panda.".
Yet the visuals and the immaculate choreography sees Wong Kar-wai move martial art filming forward with an inimitable style not seen since "The Matrix.".
Epic in scale yet every bit as intimate as Kar-Wai's other lovelorn stories, the movie keeps you entertained for the most part.
