Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Nicky S — 25 Apr 2014
Well, this film is very paradoxical. On one hand, the cinematography is absolutely the best I've ever seen in a movie. It touches the heart with it's exquisite beauty and literally stirs the soul.
I don't say that for most movies - the imagery in this film will genuinely touch you (especially if seen on Blu-Ray). However, there is one pretty fatal flaw with this film - it has a meandering, convoluted plot which ultimately leaves the viewer tired and unsatisfied.
It's not that the plot is bad, it's pretty hard to explain - maybe it's the pacing, or the order of things, or the execution. I don't know, but bottom line - the cinematography is utterly exquisite and shows the world in all its beauty, but overall, it is not a satisfying and entertaining film.
But still, due to cinematography, acting, fantastic martial arts sequences, and a solid storyline - 5/5.
