Review of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Jerome K — 27 Jan 2015
I've never been a big fan of Wes Anderson's past films. While I can see why he is loved by many critics and has a passionate following, the type of humor his films have rarely appeals to me. It's not the laugh-out-loud kind of humor that comes from well-timed jokes but rather from the idiosyncrasies of quirky, odd people in extraordinary situations.
Fortunately, I did enjoy this film more than I expected, and I think it's because the story was more lighthearted than some of Anderson's previous work. I found the world and characters he created quite intriguing.
I also find it refreshing a comedy like this was nominated for 2014's Oscar for Best Picture compared to the rest of the serious dramas that were nominated.
